Scholarship and Financial Aid Information

Financial Aid - Awards are based on financial need

  • www.studentaid.ed.gov  - describes federal student aid programs (grants, loans)
    • Grants - Pell and Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) do not have to be repaid.
    • Loans - Perkins, Direct and Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) must be repaid.
    • Federal Work Study (FWS) provides income (which does not have to be repaid) from a part-time job.
  • www.fafsa.ed.gov - website where you complete your FAFSA Application for Federal Student Aid.  Be sure to use ed.gov website as other sites will charge money and FAFSA is free!

Scholarships - Awards based on merit

  • Lottery Funded Scholarships and Grants  - administered by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education

    • Eligibility Requirements - SC residents enrolled in two courses (6 credit hours) in one semester in a degree seeking program at a SC two-year college are eligible for Lottery Tuition Assistance reducing college tuition costs.  LTA is not based upon a financial need.  SC Graduates must not be a recipient of Life, Palmetto Fellows, or HOPE Scholarship in the same academic year.
    • Lottery Scholarship Programs
      • Palmetto Fellows Scholarship
        • may receive up to $6,700 their freshman year and up to &7,500 for their sophomore, junior, and senior years.  Half of the Scholarship is awarded in the fall term and half in the spring term.  The Scholarship must be applied directly toward the cost of attendance, less any other gift aid received.  Assuming continued eligibility, Palmetto Fellows may receive Scholarship funding for a maximum of eight full-time terms of study toward their first bachelor's degree at an eligible four-year institution in South Carolina.
      • Life Scholarship
        • Up to $5,000 (including a $300 book allowance) each academic year toward the cost of attendance at an eligible four-year institution in SC Funding limited to eight (8) consecutive terms for the first bachelor's degree or ten (10) consecutive terms for the first approved five-year bachelor's degree.

                                       OR

        • Up to the cost of tuition plus a $300 book allowance each academic year at an eligible technical college in SC.  At the eligible two-year public and independent institutions in the State, students may receive up to the cost of tuition at the USC's Regional Campuses.  Funding limited to two (2) consecutive terms for the first one-year program or four (4) consecutive terms for the first associate's degree program or a two-year program that is acceptable as full credit toward a bachelor's degree.
      • Hope Scholarship
        • a one-year merit-based Scholarship created for first-time entering freshman attending eligible four-year institutions in SC.  Eligible full-time students may receive the following:
          • Up to $2,800 (including a $300 book allowance) toward the cost of attendance
          • Up to two (2) consecutive terms of funding

    • Scholarships awarded by the colleges/universities
    • Visit the college websites
    • Use SCOIS
    • Many colleges use the application for admission for the scholarship application as well.  Pay attention to the date of acceptance for being considered for scholarships.
